Without an Email Marketing List, Your Small Business Could Be Missing Out On Big Sales

These days if you're trying to reach a bunch of potential customers all at once, you probably think social media is the way to go. You're probably right. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be taking steps to build your customer base in other ways. That includes maintaining an email list.

Yeah, it sounds old-fashioned, but just think about it: This is a way to directly connect only with people who are already interested in whatever goods or services you provide - at least a little bit, anyway - and gives you a lot of flexibility. How much flexibility? Consider these:

1) More creative freedom

One of the things about Twitter or even Facebook that can be a bit of a pain is the fact that your message will be limited. Whether it's 140 characters or a maximum number of words before you get that annoying "Read More" option, you might have to do some linguistic acrobatics to get your message across along with a link to your website. There are no such problems with an email. This isn't to say you should be writing War and Peace in such a message, but you can include images, words, links and so on all at the same time.

2) Being generous

One great thing email lists do is make it so that only those receiving the message, or their friends, are likely to see that you're offering discounts through that medium. That's a great way to get more people to sign up, and a better way to keep those who are already signed up to keep buying your products or services. Everyone likes getting discounts, especially from companies they already know and like, so that kind of thing can be a boon to your business right away.

3) Many ways to sign up

Finally, when you're promoting your email list, the ways people can sign up aren't limited to going to Twitter or Facebook and clicking a button to follow or like. They can sign up on your site itself, when they make a purchase online, or even do it in person if they're so inclined. Of course, you don't want to be pushy about it, but by highlighting all the ways that signing up can be a help to customers or clients, you might be getting someone on your side for life.
